In Nigeria today, we talk about what matters, Issues concerning the Rights of Children with Disability (CWD) matters.
As part of efforts to enlighten the society on the rate of Abuse, Discrimination, and Stigmatization on the vulnerable especially the children with disabilities in Lagos, ICCF in her 20215 Children’s Day Festival of Childhood program held on the 6th of June, 2021 tagged;
RIGHTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITY, OUR COMMUNITY CONCERN, END STIGMATISATION
Invited for the program is HOD of Agric & Social Services in eight LGAs in5 Ikeja division5 of Lagos state; Religion Leaders, Community Leaders, various association members, and all stakeholders to enlighten/expose them on issues concerning children living with disability
Disability is a natural part of the human experience across the globe, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion but people with disabilities are often seen as ‘different from the norm of what it means to be human, and as a result, they are marginalized in their societies ranging from health, education, social protection, participation and general wellbeing for their survival and development.
The event is to educate the community, understand the diversity in disability and develop positive attitudes favoring respect, understanding, cooperation, mutual help, acceptance, and integration into the community, we must accept other people are different and ensure that everyone enjoys the same right. We need to encourage children/community to learn more about disability, this will help to change people’s attitudes and give them more knowledge about disability. When people know why somebody is different, when they have more information, it is easier for them to accept others and remove obstacles from their lives. We must understand that people are different and that society must be prepared to embrace people’s differences. Our optimum goal is to break the perceived barriers in our communities
In addition, ICCF is taking this enlightenment campaign on Child’s Right Law to the grassroots with the aim to educate them on necessary steps to prevent an infringement on their rights, to promote the participation of children with disabilities as full members of society and discusses all aspects of their development, including access to education, health services and rehabilitation, social and legal assistance, play and cultural activities, vocational and life-skills training.
The grassroots levels play many roles for CWDs; they are best vehicle to carry out the aspirations of people with disabilities, best level of government to know their needs, aspirations and abilities. We will urge our society to see children with disabilities as leaders of tomorrow and that there is Ability in their Disability. Parents & guardians of children with disabilities are implored to always give them the necessary encouragement by focusing on their capabilities so that they can be useful to themselves and the society at large.
